We celebrate the rich diversity of these journeys while honoring their shared importance. Whether families choose public schools, homeschooling, or any other model, what matters is the intentionality behind those choices and the depth of engagement with learning.

Quill and Quest operates through three interconnected pillars: Teaching & Research, where we engage in hands-on history education while studying educational approaches throughout time; Public Anthropology, documenting the journeys of people who deliberately and intentionally take active roles in their children’s education or even the education of the self outside of formal academic environments; and Advocacy & Public Speaking, sharing stories and perspectives that promote informed conversations about educational choice. Together, these elements form our commitment to understanding, documenting, and championing educational freedom for families.

An Educational Journey Worth Sharing
Despite my PhD in Anthropology and experiences living abroad studying archaeology and medical anthropology, my professional life felt unfulfilling. I worked for prestigious institutions like Johns Hopkins and the American Anthropological Association, yet every path seemed to dead-end, leaving me frustrated and adrift.
Everything changed with COVID. When pandemic learning moved online, I watched as outdated systems failed to work for our family’s needs.
One day, I closed my daughter’s computer and decided to take my family on a different kind of education journey. What began as a necessity during COVID became a revelation. Homeschooling didn’t just transform my perspective on education—it cemented convictions I’d held for years about how people truly learn and what education should be.
Through this unexpected journey, I discovered that becoming my family’s educational leader was the meaningful work I’d been searching for all along. My years of academic training suddenly found purpose as I created an educational experience tailored to my daughter’s needs, and in doing so, I found myself again.
